Where to Stay in Iceland

I think this really depends on what you're looking for! Hotels can be pretty expensive, especially if you are booking last minute. Because I was traveling alone for the first time, I felt most comfortable staying at a hotel, where I knew if anything went wrong, I would have people around me to help. If I had been traveling with friends, and we were staying put in Reykjavik for at least four nights, I definitely would have looked into an Airbnb.

I didn't do too much research on hostels, but i'm sure you could find a great one in the city! Check out Kex Hostel. I also read that a lot of people traveling around the Ring Road also known as Route 1 rent campers and pitch tents (may be trickier in the winter, but worth looking into)!

Here are the places I stayed:

I stayed here my first night in Reykjavik and thought it was an excellent! The staff was very welcoming, and you can't beat the location in terms of shopping and bar hopping. It is a very modern looking hotel, with a restaurant attached (unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to check it out). There is also a hot tub in the basement, for those looking to relax after a long day of travel. The only thing to note is that there is no parking lot, so be ready to keep your eyes peeled for a spot on the street. With all the snow it can be a bit tricky.

I stayed here for the last two nights of my stay and absolutely loved it. While 101 Hotel has a very luxurious, modern, sleek feel, Icelandair Marina has a quirky, fun, trendy feel! While it is not as close to the main street of bars and shops (still in walking distance), it has a few awesome spots just outside its doors. And one of the top rated bars (Slippbarrin) is located inside the hotel!

This hotel was absolutely stunning. Unfortunately I arrived at 3 am after a long drive and had to run off to an Ice Cave tour at 8 am, so I did not have time to use the amenities and appreciate the view, but I still highly recommend this spot if you are traveling south to the glaciers. It's also a great open space to possibly catch The Northern Lights, which I did!

I actually didn't end up staying here, because my flight was canceled, but I heard wonderful things about it. This is another great spot to try and catch The Northern Lights, as it is just outside the city, and all the walls are glass! They also refunded my hotel room after I let them know about the flight cancelation, so plus 1 for hospitality.
