This is going to be a short post, but I thought I'd list a few things to get you going!
Gas vs. Diesel: There is not a huge difference in price between gas and diesel, so don't spend too much time worrying about that choice.
Winter travelers: Get four-wheel drive.
This is the website I ended up booking through, and overall, I had a good experience. I was a little confused at the airport when no one had heard of Reykjavik Auto, but that is because they go through Lagoon. I'm not 100% sure if it's better to book through one website over the other, but Reykjavik Auto is what I saw first. The staff was extremely friendly and payment was pretty straightforward. Note: you have to take a 10-15 minute car ride from the airport to their office, so just take that into account for planning purposes. Someone will pick you up, but just make sure you have their number on hand, in case your flight is delayed.
Heard they were cheap and efficient. They book up quickly, so get on it!
Mixed reviews, but Hertz is my go to back home.
